Whether or not you need to pay tuition fees before applying for a student visa depends on your location. If you are applying from outside New Zealand, INZ does not require you to provide evidence of payment until after your application has been approved in principle. However, you must show proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, unless you are exempt. You will also need to follow your education providers policies.
Please note that our advisors may recommend that applicants who require a faster visa approval process pay their tuition fees upfront in order to expedite the process.
If you are applying from within New Zealand, you must pay your tuition fees before submitting your application.
If you plan to enrol in multiple courses or a single course that lasts more than one year, you must demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover the tuition fees for the first course or first year of study, as well as provide evidence of how you will pay for subsequent years’ tuition fees.
The duration of your stay in New Zealand with a Student Visa depends on your course duration. You may be given the right to stay in New Zealand for up to three months after the end of your course. You need to double check the visa expiry date on your visa carefully.
You can work while studying in New Zealand with a Student Visa for up to 20 hours a week during your term time and full-time during breaks if the visa conditions allow this. However, if the visa conditions prohibit employment, it is important to avoid working or you will risk cancellation of the visa.
The processing time for a New Zealand Student Visa varies depending on many factors. You can check the latest figures on the Immigration New Zealand’s website. However, actual processing times vary widely and are not predictable.
International students must provide evidence of financial support during their stay in New Zealand. The fund normally includes your tuition fee, living expenses ($17,000 per year for students attending year 1-13 schools, and $20,000 per year for tertiary students), and onward travel cost.
Yes, international students must have comprehensive travel and medical insurance for the duration of their stay in New Zealand. Your institution normally includes the insurance fee in your invoice and they will arrange it for you.
Yes, you can bring your family with you to New Zealand if you meet specific requirements, such as proof of financial support. There are different types of visas for family members, depending on different factors, such as the level of your study. Consult our advisers for more information.
Yes, you can travel outside of New Zealand while on a Student Visa. However, you must have a valid passport, a valid Student Visa if you plan to return to New Zealand.
The primary conditions are that the visa holder attends classes at all times (any absences must be explainable with genuine reasons), at the place of study listed on the visa, and make satisfactory progress in their course.
Students must also maintain sufficient funds for living costs throughout their study.
Undertaking employment where the visa does not allow this, or exceeding the maximum number of work hours printed on the visa, would represent a breach of conditions.
Completing a Level 7 Bachelors degree, or a Level 8-10 Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or PhD will allow the graduate to apply for a Post Study Work Visa, as long as the course has been studied for at least 30 weeks from within New Zealand. These work visas will allow the holder to work in any occupation. The length of the visa may be up to 3 years, depending on the circumstances.
Certain specific Level 4 to 7 non-degree qualifications (Certificates, Diplomas, Graduate Diplomas) may also lead to a Post-Study Work Visa, if the course was studied entirely in New Zealand. These will only allow the holder to work in an occupation related to their studies. The length of the visa depends on the length of the course.
Most Post Study Work Visas must be applied for within 3 months of the student visa expiry. Applicants must also have $5000 in funds to qualify.
If your course does not make you eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa, and obtain a full-time job offer before your student visa expires (or after you leave New Zealand), you may be eligible for an Accredited Employer Work Visa instead (if all requirements for that work visa are met).
