Study: how to apply

Apply to study in New Zealand

Take the first steps towards a life changing experience

You will get free advice to help you find the best course for you and which school to attend. Contact Choose New Zealand now, or visit our pages on courses or institutions.

When you have decided what to study, you will apply to the school you have chosen for an Offer Of Place. (Actually, we will do that for you.) If you send all the right documents, your application should take only a few days to process.

Necessary documents include:

  • Proof of your identity (A scan of your passport details page)
  • Your Academic Record
  • Your English level (for tertiary courses)

Get the best education from your school

- For Primary or Secondary levels of study, you will enter a class near your own age. You may need some extra study of English first, and your school may also offer ESOL support, or recommend extra ESOL classes.

New Zealand schools run from February to December, while in the Northern Hemisphere most schools run from July to June. You may want to take some English or High School Preparation classes in the six months before the New Zealand school year begins.

- For studying ESOL only (English for Speakers of Other Languages) your English will improve much more quickly when you study in an English-speaking country. Your chosen English language school may want to know your current level of English and your plans for the future. That way they can understand how long you will take to reach your education goal, and the best way to help you achieve it.

- For studying qualifications at Tertiary level, the minimum requirements are set by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). For some institutions, including universities, you will need higher than the minimum requirement. For a list of qualifications needed for each level of study, click here.

After you have applied

If you are accepted into the school or course that you want, you will be sent an Offer Of Place and a Fees Statement for tuition fees, costs, and services. We will guide you on the next step of applying for a Student Visa.
